Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
The Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a relationship between body weight and hight and is strongly assosiated with the human body's amount of fat and health risk. The calculation can be done in two ways, depending on whether you use the metric system or not:
Calculation:
BMI = 705 x (Weight in pounds)
(height in inches)2
Calculation metric system:
BMI = (Weight in kilograms)
(height in meters)2
The number you get after using this formula, will fit into one of the following categories of body weight:
| BMI | Weight category |
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| Between 18.5 and 24.9 | Normal |
| Between 25 and 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obese |
If your BMI is below 18.5 you should consult your physician to find out if you should gain weight, as a state of underweight could decrease your immune system and cause illnesses.
A BMI of 25 and above indicates that you should lower your weight by exercising and through a healthy diet.
If your BMI is 30 or above you have and increased risk for serious health problems as heart diseases and diabetes and other problems. If you fall in this category you will have a huge benefit of changing your lifestyle when it comes to physical activity and nutrition.
